This Goochland-bred horse became a major foundation sire of th e American Thoroughbred racehorse.\nSponsored by the Goochland County Histo rical Society and the Deep Run Hunt Club, the program is free and open to t he public.\n James Payne Beckwith, Jr. is a descendant of one of Sir Ar chie’s owners. He will give an illustrated presentation, “All in the Family : Diomed, Sir Archie, and Henry from the 1780 Epsom Derby to the Great Matc h Race of 1823”. He will discuss the major horses in the development of the American Thoroughbred, including Diomed, the imported English horse that w as Sir Archie’s sire, and the later offspring that represented North vs. So uth in the Great Match Race of 1823.
